Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ – Matthew 7:21-23

The U.N. released a statement yesterday declaring its shock at atrocities taking place in Syria. Please realize, U.N. workers live on the frontline of earth’s most war torn societies – When they are shocked, we must make note.

Meanwhile, USA Today’s top news stories for week, February 25th, were:

Fighting of Anti-Gay Law in Arizona

Judge Strikes Down Texas Gay Ban Law

Army Yanks 588 Soldiers After Sexual Assault

 Obama Makes Sly “Caddyshack” Reference

 Do Dogs Feel Shame?

Before providing my thesis I dare not allow the liberal and subjective titles of the aforementioned “news” stories, go without question. Firstly, the law in Arizona proposed as “anti-gay” is not in fact anti-gay but a mere protection of freedoms documented in the constitution some two hundred years ago. Secondly, what does it mean, for our media and presidency, when the leader of our country, amidst impeachment charges and healthcare reform, makes headlines for social spoofing of a 1980’s comedy? Finally, what do we learn about our national conscience and intellectual stimulation when we’ll allow, let alone read, stories of canine emotion, while our soldiers die overseas and unemployment lines grow?

Yet, these frivolities are not the issue of this post – Maybe next week.

My grave concern today is that we, as Americans, call these “news stories” while tens of thousands across the world endure genocidal tortures at the behest of inhumane warlords and tyrannical rulers! My grave concern is that our world trembles while America sips its margarita of American Idol and TMZ.

The moral compass of our nation has swung dangerously far. Far from it’s mid nineteenth century position of assistance in two world wars, past the moderate center of concern and awareness in the 1980’s, skating by the curious agendas of selfish aggression in the new millennium, and ever closer to a frightening dial position called, “Disdain & Ignorance.”

Millions are hungry and being murdered while we discuss how a Golden Retriever named “Spot” deals with his anxiety. Absurd. Ignorant. Cloaked. Moronic. Satanic.

American Christian now is the time to rise from slumber.

You’re being desensitized and propagandized while the earth is being devoured underneath your IKEA daybed! The news you read is not news. Facebook friends are not friends. Public education is not a neutral bystander. And, yes its still porn even if it’s on Netflix.

American Christian now is the time to rise from slumber.

For two weekends at Church at the Mission Tustin we’ve dug into the book of 1 Corinthians, establishing foundations for what the grace identified Christian should be and what the grace unified church should look like.  If you missed these sermons, please go back and listen to the podcasts here. And, this coming Sunday we’ll begin our journey towards defining the DIFFERENCES between true Christ followers in true churches as compared to the fakes and false prophets of contemporary culture. This isn’t legalism. It’s truth. And, truth rightly divided illuminates error.

The Scriptures we study these next two weeks, regarding purity in the church, marriage, and liberty, were written 2,000 years ago but apply more succinctly to our culture today than in any period of recent history. Are they controversial? Yes. Are they necessary? More than ever.

For those looking for a 140 character sound bite on how to be “nice” or those looking for how-to bullet points on trivial legalisms comparing good TV from bad TV, this series won’t interest you, because true gospel-centered, born-again, life-changing, conversion comes at the cost of trivial marvels and at the painful penitence of private confessions. True grace changes everything. We become like Jesus in His sufferings. True grace is freely received but quite costly to shoulder.

To walk in the fullness of Jesus Christ in a world of false religions and political correctness, requires convictions that rise only from a transformed heart and prepared for a sacrificial existence. And, these convictions strengthen the Christian when all else have lost hope.

Awake from your slumber America. Let’s bring hope to all people once again.

Join Church at the Mission Tustin in person or online each Sunday as we continue our series Culture Wars: A Christian Overcoming in the Age of Text, Tweet, & Twerk.
